Committee on Microbiological Safety (COMS) serves as the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) for Harvard Medical School and [COMS-Affiliated Institutions](https://prod-coms.drupalsites.harvard.edu/file_url/252)[.](https://prod-coms.drupalsites.harvard.edu/file_url/161) The committee oversees all work with COMS regulated materials ([CRM](https://prod-coms.drupalsites.harvard.edu/file_url/254)[)](https://hu-my.sharepoint.com/:b:/g/personal/serena_jao_hms_harvard_edu/ERg9kCyU7PxAsGfBo5USNQMBMAd0mR_iPit9PifeiFciQA?e=GrwHEC). No CRM projects may commence without COMS approval.

COMS institutions are permitted by the Boston Public Health Commission, Cambridge Biosafety Committee and National Institutes of Health Office of Science Policy.
